Do you have a product idea you need help vetting or need to research other products on the market to determine viability of your idea vs. the competition? Perhaps you aren’t quite ready to start on prototyping yet and need help deciphering an appropriate path forward. If so, our engineers can help. We refer to this work as a Phase 0 Project in our phase-gate Product Development Process.

Our clients have benefited from the technical research results we’ve delivered at various early stages of ideation.  Sometimes that takes the form of an engineering research report that informs whether a design idea warrants further concepting, architectural explorations, feasibility studies or prototyping. Other times it can be a competitive product analysis or benchmarking report that fleshes out differentiators and price points that help dictate likely market and competitive viability.

This type of early exploratory research is a great way to fully investigate an idea or concept – a proverbial way to dip your toe in the design engineering pool without committing too much, too fast.

As you’d imagine, most research projects are highly confidential so not publicly sharable but you can learn more about benchmarking other technology research we completed as part of the development of the award-winning Opulus Skincare Device.

Simplexity has also worked closely with universities, research institutions, and start-ups when they have received grant funding.  A few examples of partnerships which involved both research and prototyping are:

• Developing multiple rapid prototypes/concepts for vascular monitoring devices for Oregon Health and Sciences University
• Working with a start-up, Bio1 Systems, who received SBIR grant funding, to prove out a prototype for an electronic tactical combat casualty care ID tag which expedites patient medical care
• Partnering with OHSU to prototype and patent a medical device, TouchSpot, that could be used in the home to collect a precise volume of blood
